Nurol Makina: The Defence Industry Veterans

Back in 1976, Nurol Makina was established as part of one of the legacy conglomerates in Turkey, namely Nurol Corporation, for supplying construction of key turn industrial facilities. Pragmatic management of the corporate guided the company into defense manufacturing in the early 1990s as subsystem supplier and following 2000s it started armored vehicle design and developments like 6x6 vehicles and internal security vehicles. Especially for the last ten years, Nurol Makina focused only on 4x4 tactical wheeled armored vehicles to become one of the most preferred suppliers in the international arena.

Today, the success of Nurol Makina is primarily driven by three main factors. First, the company indigenously develops 4x4 tactical wheeled armored vehicles that offer differentiated mobility and protection features from competitors. Second is Nurol Makina’s agile project and production management, which meets user’s stringent technical and schedule requirements. Last but not least, the company is always focused on its determined business development activities across a wide range of countries. “4x4 armored vehicle is a hyper-competitive segment of the defence industry and we have the reputation for providing high performance vehicles,” says Mr. Engin Aykol, the CEO and General Manager of Nurol Makina.

Ensuring Effective Completion of the Combatant’s Mission

Nurol Makina’s vehicles have high payload carrying capacity as well as a NATO Generic Vehicle Architecture (NGVA) complaint digital infrastructure. This allows for improved weapon and mission subsystems/ payload integration and interoperability and reduced life costs for the users. Further, the company provides the highest protection level available in its segments without sacrificing high mobility performance and agility. Therefore, its users experience the highest level of survivability and reliability in their challenging missions, which gives an additional advantage i.e., physiological superiority against the adversary.

Nurol Makina always puts a strong emphasis on providing the most reliable solution in the hyper-competitive 4x4 armored vehicle segment. “Our founders have always believed in the safety and wellbeing of a combatant as it cannot be measured in financial terms. And for years, this has been the guiding principle of our business,” says Mr. Aykol. “That’s why despite keeping focus on price reduction, we never underestimate safety and effectiveness. So we provide cost-effective solutions for the user. Our armored vehicles are expected to serve 20-30 years.”
Due to the superior effectiveness of Nurol Makina’s vehicles, users deploy them at front lines in highrisk regions. Therefore, it is not a rare event that the company’s vehicles are attacked by a high amount of IED, mine, and various types of ballistic ammunition. “We are very proud that we protected lives of combatants in all cases” mentions Emre Akin, Strategic Planning and Market Development Director, Nurol Makina. Also, the vehicles are deployed in both conventional warfare as part of a network centric environment against threats with sophisticated technology level as well as high asymmetric conflict regions. “In each case, our goal is to ensure effective completion of the combatant’s mission with maximum personal safety,” states Dr. Anil Karel, Deputy General Manager, Nurol Makina.

Navigating through the Uncertain Times

Apart from this focus on quality, what keeps Nurol Makina a notch above the rest is its ability to understand the market dynamics and act accordingly. To elucidate, as the main challenge in defense manufacturing today is the increased uncertainty level in the supply chain in terms of lead times and price stabilities, the company has established even closer contact with suppliers to understand and follow their business dynamics. Furthermore, Nurol Makina also focuses on increasing commonality in its new designs and the use of bestin- class COTS systems to reduce dependency on niche suppliers.

Further, many countries have reduced their budgets and/or shifted their procurement plans. In response to this, Nurol Makina modified its business plans. “We had some delays in procurement due to global supply chain disruptions and reduced workhours in the initial phases of the pandemic,” says Mr. Aykol. However, the company was quick to adapt to the new business environment and survived this pandemic period without having major health problems as well as without major disruptions in deliveries. Even though the number of travels was greatly reduced, Nurol Makina was able to sign a few contracts at the peak times of this pandemic.

Having carved such a unique niche, Nurol Makina currently has about 20 users from South America to Asia, from Africa to Gulf countries, as well as EU member and/ or NATO countries for national and/or UN missions. In all geographic regions, the company is aiming to work on several projects as long as they are not subject to an international arms embargo and/or international sanctions.

In a nutshell, forging corporate values with more than four decades of engineering experience, Nurol Makina has emerged as a leading 4x4 tactical wheeled armored vehicles designer and integrator. Also Nurol Makina is a technology developer company regarding armored vehicles. Nurol Makina gives importance to the feedbacks of the users to develops its products. The coming years also witness the company touching new heights of success owing to its focus on quality and effectiveness.
