The air traffic management (ATM) and control of air traffic is a large human-machine enterprise that is responsible for monitoring and controlling airborne vehicles, regardless of type. With the advent of unmanned aircraft systems and commercial space operations entering the ATM enterprise, there is a growing need to prevent and control non-cooperative aircraft for the safety of all operations.

Focused onthe surveillance technology arena, Hensoldt and FAA believe that emerging technologies, including passive non-cooperative surveillance, present a viable surveillance capability alternative that can be considerably more affordable than conventional radar systems—the recently released Enterprise Architecture Roadmap to the Future 2025 and beyond released by the FAA earlier this year is a testimonial to this visionary approach to surveillance services.

This is where HENSOLDT Inc. plans to take the center stage. As a fully-owned subsidiary of HENSOLDT Holding, the corporation operates in the U.S. to provide robust optronics, radars, and sensors, for situational awareness in the air, on land and on the sea.
And for the FAA, will offer next generation surveillance technology alternatives (such as non- cooperating passive radar, among others) to move quickly from research-based demonstrations in operational test and evaluation settings to emerge as a future cornerstone National Airspace System (NAS) infrastructure program.

“Air traffic surveillance and management system in the U.S. are not able to address the complex needs of modern aviation including non-cooperative manned and unmanned aircraft. Our mission is to support ATM modernization and increase safety across the National Air Space (NAS),” says Lew Iadarola, Sr. Director Business Development, HENSOLDT Inc.

HENSOLDT Inc’s ATC solutions suite consists of innovative new developments, including the TwInvis passive radar, Xpeller Counter UAS system, and the ASR-NG airport surveillance radar. The TwInvis radar combines provides comprehensive 3D information about cooperative and non-cooperative aircraft detected. “Our passive radar is truly cutting-edge. It works more efficiently than the traditional primary surveillance radars—at a fraction of both the initial investments and long-term support costs,” says Iadarola. “As a world leader in the sensors and surveillance market, we work closely with other industry innovators to understand latest technology trends and apply these insights using rapid prototyping and operational trials to safely integrate these capabilities and features into our product release plans. This approach ensures that our customers remain confident that our solutions are best in class, and uniquely aligned with their specific operational requirements and use cases.”

What empowers such success is HENSOLDT’s 150 years of industry experience. They believe that the U.S. will play a vital role in solving ATM and surveillance problems. Committed to being part of this vision, the company has invested in the US market, initiating several pathways to ensure their contribution to the future ATM and UTM. “We have already earned trust in this competitive market, and have some exciting plans going forward. We believe that our pioneering passion, combined with key customers who are also visionaries committed to success, partner to enable us to emerge as a strong ATM sensor and surveillance player in the U.S., and engineer competitive solutions that will enable Hensoldt to take a leading role in ATM in the coming years” concludes Iadarola.
